Microsoft Entra Risk Policies: What You Should Know

What Are Risk Policies?

Microsoft Entra ID Protection identifies activity that may indicate a risky sign-in or compromised account. Risk-based Conditional Access policies can then require additional verification, prompt the user to secure their account, or block access based on the level of risk.

The goal is simple: create a consistent response when something does not look right.

If your organization uses Microsoft 365, now is a good time to understand what identity protections you have in place. Microsoft will retire legacy Identity Protection risk policies on October 1, 2026. Organizations using them should review their current configuration and transition appropriate protections to Conditional Access. Licensing matters, too. Some advanced identity protection capabilities require Microsoft Entra ID P2 or licensing that includes those features.

Start by understanding what is in place today:

• Review your Microsoft Entra and Conditional Access settings.
• Confirm whether legacy risk policies are still being used.
• Verify that your licensing supports the protections you need.
• Make sure employees are registered for multifactor authentication.
• Establish a clear process for responding to risky sign-ins or accounts.

The right approach should strengthen security without creating unnecessary disruptions for employees.
